I had spied some brass antelope bookends on etsy that were featured in one of the online decorating magazines and had fallen in love. What I didn't love was the price of $118 dollars. YIKES! So I took to ebay to find something similar. If you search for "Brass Bookends" you'll find a lot of potential treasures, including several brass antelopes that looked identical to the etsy offering (minus the pricetag). They're all the same size/weight and looked to be the same casting so I started perusing the ebay antelopes to see how low I could go.
One listing showed the same bookends however they were attached to wooden pieces. They were pretty dingy, and I was not a fan of the wood, but the price of 9 dollars was right so I bid on them. I halfway expected to lose them at the last minute but a day later the auction ended and I was still the highest bidder! They arrived about a week later, and upon inspection I found that I could unscrew the wooden pieces and free the brass antelopes. Then I had to clean them... I used some copper cleaner I bought at Williams Sonoma for our All Clad cookware and the difference was amazing - they look every bit as lovely as the $118 version on etsy!
Next up are a trio of little brass owls I scored for 7 bucks - they just arrived and are waiting to be polished! I'm getting addicted to ebay these days!
And here is a "Before" pic of the owls - learned my lesson this time! Though they aren't nearly as dingy as the antelopes were when they arrived.
